House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC)

One of the most enjoyable things in my life is whenever I have the opportunity to meet or just be in the same room with one of the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. And today, I was blessed to see and hear the number three ranking member of the Democratic Party’s leadership in the House, the Honorable James E. Clyburn of South Carolina. The occasion was the Urban Issues Breakfast Forum of Greater Los Angeles, hosted by educator and syndicated columnist, Anthony Asadullah Samad, Ph.D.

Congressman Clyburn opened his address with a brief history of how the position on “Whip” came about and that took me back to my high school civics classes at Morse High in San Diego (Mr Arthur Pattoff).

After listening to Congressman Clyburn explain that House Democrats are split among SEVEN caucuses – CBC, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific, Progressives, Blue Dogs, Women, and New Democrats (centrists) – and how legislation has to be crafted to attract votes of all of them in contrast to the GOP who are pretty much in lock-step opposition to President Obama and the Democratic agenda, I came away with new respect for what has been accomplished since January 20, 2009 and a renewed resolve to continue spreading the word about our great president, Barack Obama, and the fact that we must get out the vote on November 2nd.
