“I’m a Christian by choice. My family didn’t – frankly, they weren’t folks who went to church every week. And my mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew, but she didn’t raise me in the church. So I came to my Christian faith later in life, and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead – being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me.”  – President Barack Obama, in a rare discussion about his religious beliefs, described himself on Tuesday as a “Christian by choice” who arrived at his faith in adulthood because “the precepts of Jesus Christ” helped him envision the kind of life he wanted to lead when he was asked, “Why are you a Christian.” The question was posed by a woman at a backyard conversation in Albuquerque, NM, part of a series of meetings Obama is holding to talk informally with Americans.

“I’m doing this because I know there are a lot of Megs out there who are mistreating the Nickys who work so hard for them.” – Former Meg Whitman housekeeper Nicandra Diaz Santillan who claims the Republican gubernatorial candidate knew she was an undocumented immigrant when she worked as a housekeeper for Whitman’s family.

“As soon as we found that she was an illegal immigrant, we did what we had to do as an employer and let her go. All the documentation that we had said she was legal…. We absolutely did what we needed to do as an employer.” – Meg Whitman in response to charges that her family knowingly employed an illegal immigrant as a housekeeper.

“I would have suspended him [Jets receiver Braylon Edwards] for this game [against the Dolphins on Sunday] because of a pattern of behavior. He was there with Donte Stallworth drinking with him the night Stallworth ultimately ended up killing someone driving home that evening (actually, it was around 7 the next morning). He was there in the Cleveland nightclub [Edwards would be placed on probation last January after pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct]. … And now the DUI on top of it. My question would have been, When are you going to understand this? When are you going to understand that you have to take responsibility? From this football team’s standpoint, they would have been better served had they gone ahead and suspended him for this one day.

Now, on top of the Hard Knocks, on top of the female reporter incident, I think this was a great time for Rex Ryan and the Jets to have taken a stand, saying, ‘Listen, I know what the CBA says. Maybe we lose this case ultimately on appeal, but the New York Jets are going to take a stand and we’re going to take it right here.’ ” – NBC Sunday Night Football analyst Cris Collinsworth, on how he would have handled Edwards’ situation after he was arrested last Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated.

OBAMA MAY GIVE RAHM A ROSE-GARDEN SENDOFF – Chicago Tribune A12, “Emanuel departure possible Friday,” by Katherine Skiba and Hal Dardick: “The long-rumored departure, which might be staged as a Rose Garden event featuring President Barack Obama, likely will see Emanuel saying he plans to ‘explore’ a run for mayor … The announcement also could come early next week … An official announcement of Emanuel’s candidacy wouldn’t come until later, after Emanuel embarks on a ‘listening tour’ next week to hear what Chicago residents are concerned about.”

DNC video, “Now, That’s Funny”: “First, the tobacco industry came calling and Republican John Boehner did their bidding. When his friends on K Street came calling, Boehner did THEIR bidding, too. When Wall Street came calling, that’s right: Boehner did THEIR bidding. He’s been in Washington for decades. He knows how the game works — he CREATED the game. And he’s taken millions from special interests And now John Boehner wants to talk about reforming Congress? [Laugh track.] Now THAT’S funny.” CHYRON: John Boehner Wants to ‘Reform Congress’? RANDOM THOUGHTS

I can’t be the only one who thinks Rahm Emanuel’s departure from the WH is a good thing, can I?

Jerry Brown or Meg Whitman. That’s like deciding between crack or heroin to get hooked on.

Gloria Allred is the cockroach of attorneys. I mean, if Meg Whitman can produce written proof that she and her husband believed that Nicandra Diaz Santillan was in the country legally and had documents that showed that, and that they fired her only after Santillan admitted that she’d lied to them, what else could they have done? As to the former housekeeper’s claims that she was “exploited, disrespected, humiliated and emotionally and financially abused”, those seem to be separate issues to me. By the way, I hate Gloria Allred, just in case you were wondering.

Why are Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher working so hard to prove that they’re still happily married? Why not do like Angelina and Brad and just live the way you want to live and not respond to rumors and innuendos. On the other hand, no woman’s coming out with alleged “tweets” from Brad. So far.

As a long-time Angeleno, I’m disappointed that neither local team, Dodgers or Angels, will be in the playoffs next week. However, as a baseball fan, I’m excited by the teams that have qualified or will this weekend.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak seems upset that Andrew Bynum’s not ready to play after knee surgery this summer while coach Phil Jackson seems very relaxed about it. I wonder if this is an aberration or a subtle sign of discord among Laker management.

Just in case you’re wondering, Greg Oden is still alive. He’s also still not ready to play because of injury. In other words, he’s a future Clipper.
