QUOTES

“Moral disapproval alone is an improper basis on which to deny rights to gay men and lesbians.” – Chief U.S. district Judge Vaughn Walker, in overturning California’s anti-gay marriage Proposition 8.

“They’ve either taken leave of their senses or their principles.” – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, on Republicans looking to review birthright citizenship privileges granted in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

“This is madness. There are elements of our party that are marching through the fevered swamps of ideology.” – Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and a former Republican congressman from Florida.

“He’s clearly the top political strategist and political operative of his generation. He is without peer when he is raising money.” – Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), a former RNC chief of staff, talking about Mississippi governor Haley Barbour.

“We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer, so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.” – Nevada Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle who has avoided reporters, discussing her media strategy with Fox News.

“You remember our slogan during the campaign ‘Yes we can’? Their slogan is ‘No we can’t.’”  “I bring all this stuff up not because I want to re-litigate the past. I just don’t want to re-live the past.”  “I have pollsters. I know when things don’t poll well. But I wasn’t sent to Washington, you did not send me to the Oval [Office] to just do what was popular. You sent me there to do what was right.” “You notice that when you move forward in your car, you put it in D; when you want to go backward, you put it in ‘R’? Back into that ditch! Keep that in mind in November. That’s not a coincidence.” – President Barack Obama on the campaign trail this week in Washington state, Ohio and Florida.

“We don’t need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples. As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them.” [But Lott said he’s not expecting a tea-party sweep.] “I still have faith in the visceral judgment of the American people.” – Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott on the Tea Party Senate candidates that Jim DiMint of South Carolina has endorsed and contributed to.

“It was like, ‘Here’s a manual, go fly the Space Shuttle.’” – Steve Wlodek, a juror, on the complexity of the charges against Rod R. Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois.

“A chance to go to the postseason, it’s hard to pass up.” – Former Chicago Cub Derek Lee, who last month rejected a trade to the Angels, after being dealt to the Atlanta Braves this week.

Joe Scarborough Takes On Newt Gingrich Mosque Comments: ‘It’s Deplorable, It Is Sick Politics’ (VIDEO)

FROM “MORNING FIX” @ washingtonpost.com

There is widespread — and growing — confusion about President Barack Obama‘s religious affiliation with one in five Americans now saying (incorrectly) that he is a Muslim, according to a new national poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. At the risk of sounding like a cynic, I predict that between now and November, we’ll see several photos of the Obamas worshipping at church in both DC and at Camp David.

GQ correspondent Lisa DePaulo, on Joe Scarborough (“Thank You for Not Screaming”): “[H]e’s the conservative liberals suddenly think is swell … Morning Joe has become the best and most buzzed-about political show on television … The show was entirely Joe’s idea. He had this crazy notion that viewers wanted something more civilized than the usual screamfests … Everything was a battle, including the hiring of his best friend, a talented producer named Chris Licht, as executive producer. … ‘At every stop [on book tours],’ says Joe, ‘they just thank us. They say, ‘Thank you for just talking. Thank you for not screaming.’” With Louis Burgdorf cameo http://bit.ly/cH2oC4

Roger Clemens Indicted On Federal Perjury Charges

Here’s the PED/steroids toll so far: Bonds – the all-time career and single-season HR record holder, Clemens – 354 wins, 7 Cy Young Awards, McGwire – broke Roger Maris’ 37-year old record for most HRs in a season, Palmeiro – one of only four in MLB history with 3,000 career hits and 500 HRs (the other three are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray who are all in the Hall of Fame), Sosa – one of only 7 in MLB history with 600 HRs and the only player with four 60 HR seasons. Throw in Pete Rose (all-time leader in hits) and his situation and you’ve got six of baseball’s biggest stars who will most likely never be in the Hall of Fame.

Week 2:

I Bet You Didn’t Know that not since 1999 has the National League most valuable player come from a team other than the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies or St. Louis Cardinals. That might change this year with the season that Joey Votto of the Reds is having.

Antonio Cromartie Tries to Remember Names of All His Kids — Back Porch FanHouse  This fool has THREE 3 year olds and another about to turn 3! This clip reminds me of the time during the ’08 campaign when John McCain couldn’t remember how many houses his family owned: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said in an interview Wednesday (8/20/08) that he was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. “I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. “It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.” For the record, the final total, including a ranch in Sedona, AZ was eight.

Brenda Warner, wife of Super Bowl winner Kurt Warner, tells Paola Boivin of the Arizona Republic that if plans for a movie about her husband’s life come to fruition, the actor she’d most like to see in the lead role is Denzel Washington. Notes Brenda, “It would probably challenge Denzel in ways he’s never been challenged before.” Gee, ya think? The only role more challenging would be Emanuel Lewis starring in “The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Story”. Speaking of former Lakers…

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Forget about the so-called “Ground Zero” mosque. Forget about gay marriage. Forget about repealing the healthcare reform law. Forget about the 14th Amendment or anything else. The November elections are about one thing and one thing only: the economy and whether or not the country wants to go back to the policies of George W. Bush that led us into the abyss we’re trying to get out of or if it wants to keep forging ahead on a new path to a new economy. That’s it.

You know what’s really scary about the flap over comments on the so-call “Ground Zero” mosque from people like Newt Gingrich and other right-wing Republicans? There’s virtually no push-back or repudiation from what one would call the “responsible adults” of the party like George H.W. Bush, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Olympia Snowe, etc.

Palin Power? For those keeping score: With Clint Didier’s (Washington state) and Rita Meyer’s losses (Wyoming), Palin-endorsed candidates for statewide office haven’t fared so well recently.  In fact, in the last few weeks, Palin’s candidates have lost more primaries (Todd Tiahrt in KS Sen, Karen Handel in GA Gov, Bob McConnell in CO House, and CeCe Heil in TN House) than they’ve won (Tom Emmer in MN Gov and John Koster in WA House, who had a very strong showing in the jungle primary).

NY Jets coach Rex Ryan can say what he wants but I guarantee you that the criticism he’s received from his mother and Tony Dungy had an effect on his language from Week 1 (10 F-bombs) to Week 2 (2 F-bombs) or, HBO was asked to edit his language much closer. I know that the NFL’s official stance is that they haven’t said anything to the Jets or Ryan about his language but I’ll bet you everything I don’t own yet that behind the scenes, word went out from the commissioner’s office to ”Take it down a notch.”

I’ll be extremely disappointed if Dungy backs down one iota from his original statement. He was asked a question, he answered it honestly and at no time did he ever disparage Rex Ryan in any way. I also hope that Dungy doesn’t get played” by Ryan and the Jets when he visits their camp soon. Dungy is very well respected both inside and outside the NFL and in my opinion, Rex Ryan is just trying to use this media-drive “incident’ to get more publicity for himself and the Jets.

Brett Favre’s final season — or so he says — could turn sour quickly, with three of the Minnesota Vikings’ first five games against the New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets.

If for no other reason than his ridiculous excuse for testing positive for HGH usage – “I worked out so much that I had ‘Overtrained Athletic Syndrome’ ” – Brian Cushing of the NFL’s Houston Texans didn’t deserve a reduction in his four-game suspension which commissioner Roger Goodell upheld on Thursday.

The irony of the Roger Clemens indictment for lying to Congress is that unlike Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa, Clemens wasn’t subpoenaed to testify; he volunteered to speak to them!

I LOVE the new Mercedes Benz TV ad with the kids.
